Berberine is an alkaloid present in several plants such as Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), Oregon grape (Berberis aquifolium), Barberry (Berberis vulgaris) and Chinese Goldthread (Coptis chinensis). Recent studies of Berberine were carried out establishing clearly that Berberine has a therapeutic use in metabolic syndrome, to control high blood sugar and HBA1c levels.
Berberine helps to control glucose metabolism in part by activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and by increasing expression of insulin receptors and therefore reducing insulin resistance. The activation of AMPK tells the body to burn fats for energy which can assist with weight loss.
Berberine may be prescribed by your Sano Via / Medicor practitioner as part of your treatment. In this case it is not HST taxable. Please see Excise Tax Act for details.
