American Society of Clinical Oncology Position Statement on Obesity and Cancer

“In addition to contributing to heart disease and diabetes, obesity is a major unrecognized risk factor for cancer. Obesity is associated with worsened prognosis after cancer diagnosis and also negatively affects the delivery of systemic therapy, contributes to morbidity of cancer treatment, and may raise the risk of second malignancies and comorbidities.”

“The American Society of Clinical Oncology is committed to reducing the impact of obesity on cancer…”

Chemopreventive Effects of Alpha Lipoic Acid on Obesity-Related Cancers

“Studies in both in vitro cells and in vivo animal models have shown that ALA inhibits the initiation and promotion stages of carcinogenesis, suggesting that ALA has considerable attention as a chemopreventive agent.”

Effects of Bariatric Surgery on Incidence of Obesity-Related Cancers: A Meta-Analysis

“Meta-analysis of these 5 observational studies revealed that bariatric surgery was associated with a significantly (p=0.0004) reduced incidence of obesity-related cancers (OR=0.43, 95%CI, 0.27–0.69) when compared with control individuals. Pooled estimated data showed that bariatric surgery is associated with a 24% lower colorectal cancer (CRC) risk.”

Alcoholic beverages, obesity, physical activity and other nutritional factors, and cancer risk: A review of the evidence

“Three main nutritional objectives should be attained to improve cancer prevention: to reduce alcoholic beverages consumption, to have a balanced and diversified diet and to be physically active.”

Chemopreventive Action of Anthocyanin-rich Black Soybean Fraction in APC Min/+ Intestinal Polyposis Model

“Anthocyanins have been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth by suppressing oxidative stress and inflammatory responses.”

“The number of intestinal tumors was significantly lower in mice fed a 0.5% AE diet compared to those of the other groups.”

Antioxidant Phytochemicals for the Prevention and Treatment of Chronic Diseases

“Antioxidant phytochemicals can be found in many foods and medicinal plants…They often possess strong antioxidant and free radical scavenging abilities, as well as anti-inflammatory action, which are also the basis of other bioactivities and health benefits, such as anticancer, anti-aging, and protective action for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, obesity and neurodegenerative diseases.”

Genomic lesions and colorectal carcinogenesis: the effects of protein-calorie restriction and inulin supplementation on deficiency statuses

“This experiment involved adult male Swiss mice..”

“…inulin reduced the levels of intestinal carcinogenesis biomarkers in both malnourished and healthy animals.”

“These data suggest that inulin holds therapeutic potential and is a strong candidate for inclusion among the functional foods used for cancer prevention in both properly nourished and malnourished individuals.”

A sample of the current research on nutrition, obesity and cancer is provided here. Full text articles are available by clicking the medical journal titles. In some cases the articles are not freely available online. For those, only the abstracts are provided.

The research demonstrates lab evidence and human evidence from a range of studies confirming the importance of these lifestyle factors in cancer prevention. Clearly this is a complex topic. In order to apply this information in a practical and simple manner, we recommend reviewing with your naturopathic doctor, or other nutritional professional, and reading Tosca Reno’s Eat-Clean® publications.
